How to maximize my guitar playing abilities?
I’ve been playing guitar for about 1 and a half years now, i’m into shredding, and I want to mazimize my abilities on guitar. I do some quite fast shred but i’m not sure what the next steps are. any help?
I also play alot on tempo… as in, i dont make lots of mistakes i’m pretty fluid in my playing. anybody?
Shredding is fun and impresses people, but you should learn music theory, various scales & modes, and maybe explore some other musical styles like classical and jazz if you want to be well-rounded and versatile.

Learn as many different songs as possible and different styles of metal. Get a 7 string guitar and learn stuff by Type O Negative and Fear Factory, their styles are unique.
Keep playing and try and learn theory, I know its hard (I find it anyway) but just work it in small doses

Play with a drummer &/or band.
Write some cool songs.
Shredding can be a marvel to watch. BUT! if you can’t play along with a band you’re missing a vital component in your abilities as a musician.
Songwise, having lived thru the big-hair/shred king late 80s, it appeared to me that most of those guys came up with basic chord progressions over which they could musically masterbate. Unlike 70s shredders Uli Jon Roth & Michael Schenker, who had the luck of being in bands who wrote cool songs that can be appreciated even today, most of the stuff from the late-80s sounds like backing tracks for the shred dude in question.
Apart from a few die-hard fans of that genre, no one really listens to any of those guys apart from those who lucked out in finding a great band to be in (i.e. George Lynch in Dokken) or for novelty’s sake (i.e. Yngwie). Get crackin’ at writing some good songs.
Writing a catchy progression is harder than zipping up & down the fretboard in Pentatonic Mixolydian for 3 octaves

Learning theory is your next step. Many famous shredder guitar players learned classical guitar.

learn music theory. like the modes, circle of fiths, intervals, scales, and arpeggios. I know when you start out playing it sounds completely pointless but in the long run it really helps. also try learning some blues. i use to only want to play metal, but blues is so much more expressive and fun. try some srv or hendrix :)… there is no point in learning a cool lick if you can only apply it to the song in which it originated from! learn to improvise well!!!! it will get you alot farther than copying other artists. your goal should be to get a backing track of a song and improvise behind it.
keep practicing and have fun with it
