how complicated is making the transition from guitar playing to keyboard/piano?
I have been playing guitar for a few years now. I still have lots to learn but have taken an interest in the keyboard/piano. Not sure if I should get a weighted keyboard with 88 keys or a note weight digital piano with 88 keys. Any suggestions?
Honestly, it shouldn’t be that hard at all. If you break down the neck of the guitar into a diagram of the notes going all the way up the scale from an open on the Low E to a 18-22 (however many frets you have on your guitar) on the High E… it’s essentially a keyboard.
The technique is different, but that’s to be expected when switching instruments.
Fundamentally, they are both very similar in the fact that they are percussion instruments (at least the guitar and the piano) because the sound is created by vibrations emanating from the strings. With a keyboard or digital piano, the sound is going to be created digitally so it lacks this trait, but they have a shared ancestry with the piano.
When it comes down to what to buy, I would get the one with the larger sample bank or the more advanced sampling capabilities. But that’s just a personal preference. The way I feel is if you could have an orchestra (or more) at your fingertips, why wouldn’t you?
But regarding the difficulty of switching, it’s all mathematics. If you understand music theory you’ll have a much easier time. It’s still possible to make the switch without a vast knowledge of music theory but understanding the underlying principles between different notes and their relationships as well as their places in a historical context would make it infinitely easier.
