I play a little guitar and im a decent singer. Me and a few friends are trying to start a band and cant find a singer. since im a decent singer I decided i'd take a stab at doing both, but im struggling a bit.

I had this problem for a very long time. It is not easy to sing and play at the same time. Let me guess, your voice wants to do what your hands are doing, or vice versa? lol….It does take practice. What I did was sing the song a few times through and just try to play the guitar rhythm with my hands (using just air) And then I picked up the guitar and played the rhythm while humming the song a few times through…and then eventually moved on to singing and doing the guitar rhythm without actually touching the strings…after getting a really good hold on the two separate rhythms, i put them together and was able to sing and play. The good new is, once you master this for a few songs, you'll be able to sing and play at the same time without any practice..

I'v seen a way of playing the electric guitar without hitting the strings by the pickup. Your not finger picking or picking with a pick. You press down on the strings with your right hand and you hit the notes on the neck. Does anyone know what im talking about? I'v seen it in solos and i wanted to know what its called, please help, thanks.

Some good examples of finger tapping in songs are: the beginning guitar part in hot for teacher by van halen and the beginning part of heroes of sand by angra. If you're coordinated enough, you can tap more than one string at the same time. It's fun. Hope I helped ya.

Hi. I've been playing Guitar for a few months and i don't seem to be getting any better. I can't play any songs at all and my strumming seems to always be off.Is there any way to get better quickly or am I a lost cause? How can I learn to play even one song that sounds like the original and can anyone suggest an easy on to learn? Thanks.

If you are asking this question is it fair to assume you don't have an instructor or take lessons? That's ok, but it sounds like you are at a point where you need a real person to listen to what you are doing, and point you in the right direction. I don't think there is any one-size-fits-all answer to your question. Perhaps you have a friend who plays guitar? If you are in school, perhaps a music teacher would give you some tips.

Practice your chords until you can change from one to another without thinking about it. Then you can work on your strum. Think of your strumming hand as the drummer: keeping the beat. Where you really need somebody's guidance is to help you learn the different strum patterns and to show you how to use your wrist to get a fluid movement.

The fact that you have been playing for a couple of months and can't play a song yet is nothing to be discouraged about. Don't give up.

I have been playing it for about 5 years now, i still suck and can only play basic nirvana stuff, any tips on how to get better?

Since you have been playing the guitar for 5 years now you will obviously have all the basics and foundations. I would suggest three things:

1) Make sure you practice regularly. Just play your guitar constantly and try new things. Try to make it like a routine. It is much better to play frequently but for short periods of time instead of really long sessions once in a while.

2) The second thing would be to get some lessons. I personally learnt using online video. There is a whole bunch of videos on youtube that teach you how to play. I actually used a specific lesson and stuck with it. You can read about it here:

3) Always make sure you are having fun. You will learn a lot quick if you enjoy it. Try and get tabs for songs you like and practice those.

i'm still new at playing guitar but i practice alot and the metal guitar strings really hurt my fingers to the point where i can't practice for a while what can i do?
I mean the fingers i use on the fret board.

I had that too at the beginning but there's really not much you can do. Just try to practice daily for about half an hour and you'll develop calluses pretty fast. After that it shouldn't hurt too much any more. Just don't torture yourself by playing too long at the beginning but don't give up on it either. But taping your fingers up doesn't really help because you'll keep slipping of the strings and it's just a weird feeling.

I am planning to buy an acoustic guitar soon but I don't know what to get besides a guitar. Can someone who plays guitar well or know the guitar well please give me a list a things I need to learn to play the guitar and other necessities and why I should get them?

I'm just now starting to play the guitar after playing the cello for 5 years, and I can't stand using picks. I think it feels really awkward and uncomfortable, and I was just wondering if it's really necessary to use a pick. I know that Lindsey Buckingham (Fleetwood Mac's guitarist) doesn't use picks, does anybody know of any other guitarists who don't use them?

Robby Kreiger, Jimmy Page, Mark Knopfler, and Jeff Beck have all fingerpicked electrics. I love how it sounds, I wish I could fingerpick better.

Some types of music absolutely require a pick though, and it'll definitely start to feel less awkward for you after a while. I think everyone feels awkward with a pick at first.
