Do you guys know how to ease the pain on your fingers while playing the guitar?

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Well i have chubby finger tips and it actually kinda hurts when i push down on the strings. Do you guys know a way to ease the pain without losing the quality of guitar playing?

If you're just starting out, then your fingertips will hurt because they're not used to this kind of pressure. Keep practicing through the pain, unless it gets really bad then stop and pick it up the next day. Getting calluses (hard bits of skin on your fingertips that prevent your fingers from hurting), takes time and will either develop fast or slow depending on how long and often you practice.

If you've been playing for a while (ie. more than a month) and your fingertips still hurt, then most likely the action on your guitar is too high, making the strings difficult to press down. Take your guitar down to a music store and get the action lowered. I had to do this for my acoustic, and after the fix playing it was much easier.

I want to learn to play the guitar, but is it easier to learn on an acoustic guitar or an electric guitar?

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

I'm looking to buy one, but I need advice first for the acoustic or electric guitar.

Electric guitars are easier to learn because the strings aren't as tough and it isn't as hard on the fingers. You learn faster because you can hit the notes and just move on.

Even though electric is easier, a lot of people learn on acoustic. Acoustic is harder to play, but once you've learned acoustic you can play both acoustic and electric with no problems.

If you learn on electric and you decide you want to play acoustic later on, it will be harder for you and you may take time to get used to it.

Over all, it really depends on what type of music you play. If you play music, songs by P!nk, All American Rejects and other bands you want to learn electric, but if you decide to play slower, easier songs you may want to learn on acoustic.

If you get bored, or have trouble sticking with something if you don't advance quickly, the acoustic guitar is not for you. Electric would be better here, no matter what type of music you are playing.

GOOD LUCK(:

What is the most efficient way of learning to play electric guitar by yourself?

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Because of money, I'm going to teach myself how to play guitar. I haven't gotten one yet because I want to make the right decision and get the best one I can. I've been watching videos on youtube and everything seems so overwhelming to me. There are so many terms and things to know and memorize.

So, I think there is this book called "Essential Elements." Go to ANY music store you have in your town. It comes with some "Play along CD's," and others that will help you play right. I only think that you have to get a tutor for a day or two. To show you, and teach you what and what not to do with an electric guitar. Otherwise, Essential Elements is a really good book.
Hope this helps!

Any tips for playing guitar solos?

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

I've been playing guitar for almost two years and I realised that I've never tried to play any guitar solos, so I decided to learn to play 'Broken, Beat & Scarred' by 'Metallica' and I can play it all except the guitar solo and I really want to be able to play it, so is there anything that I need to know to play a guitar solo? Also, is there anything I could do to make it easier?

Learn scales. Play notes in the scale of your song. It'll get easier and more fluent as you keep doing. If you don't know any music theory look up tabs for songs with solos and see what notes are played. Learn those patterns.

Tips for Guitar playing?

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

I'm beginning to learn the guitar, and I was wondering if anyone had any tips or little tricks to make playing chords and notes easier. (Such as the position of the thumb and fingers, and also which fingers for which notes. etc.) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

One thing that helped me is to find a chord you are good at or is easy, such as the E minor or A major, and switch every four beats to a tougher chord (the one that stumped me was G major and F major barre).
I hope it helps!
Always happy to help a young guitarist!

music video of girl playing acoustic guitar rock australian or new zealand girl had accent?

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

i cant remeber the name of song or lyrics. it was rock. sounded like Jet rithm type of song. I think her aacent was australian or new zealand. i cant remember if some of the lyrics were something "boots" something wolf. I saw the video sometime last year i dont know if it was new then. i think video was blakc and white, maybe.

If it was a Kiwi it might have been Ladyhawke, she's the big news over here at the moment.

The lyrics you've mentioned don't ring a bell though - and I haven't seen a black & white video from her (one video - Paris is Burning had a wolf in it though). She is a very good guitarist.

My fav track of hers is this one - My Delirium.

Is classical guitar really more difficult to play than electric?

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

They say that classical guitar is more difficult to play than electric, but is this true? There's an old saying that goes something like this, "it takes a good 15 years to learn to play classical guitar and a good 15 hours to learn rock guitar."

But, I know that there a certain things on the electric guitar that are really difficult as well, such as pinch harmonics and as far as I know you don't do pinch harmonics on classical guitar.

it's true. Classical is harder. It's more demanding. There is no distortion or effects to cover up mistakes or simplicity.
Classical is more complex. You cant just play power chords. You cant just read tab. You have to play some serious stuff. You have to learn to read music.
Ultimately, the best electric guitarists are classically trained. They are the ones who play insane difficult solos.

Tips for soloing and playing lead guitar in rock and heavy metal?

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

I would say Im an intermediate guitar player. I know a ton of chords and have learned plenty of songs. I want to branch out and start learning to solo and improvise. What are some good scales to use for rock and heavy metal? what are good practice techniques in order to increase finger speed and strength?

I play Metal.
The first scales i learned were pentatonic, like Am.

the best thing i did to play alot faster then i could believe was really simple though.

you get a metronome and go one E string, 3 4 5 6 with all fingers, A string, 3 4 5 6, and up till high e. then back down.
seriously it sounds stupid and time consuming but HOLY CRAP it works. i should have kept it up for a month until i got amazing, but i only did it everyday for about 4 days till i got faster then i could ever needed to.

improvise from scales, speed from practice you'll be set.
