How do I get better at playing guitar?

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Ive been learning guitar now for the last couple years and for the most part Ive gotten most of the basics down. I can play practically any simple chord progression and even a couple easy solos by memorization. Now all Im doing is just strumming chords and not really getting anywhere. What drills or exercises should I be working on to get me to a more professional level of guitar playing??

Keep practicing. Jimi Hendrix virtually locked himself in his room for almost two years…and look what emerged.

please let me know the difference when we play an Electric Guitar that from playing an Acoustic guitar?

Friday, February 27th, 2009

I'm just 20 and thinking to start playing the Electric guitar…
I've been playing the acoustic guitar since ages…
Is there any primary basic difference???

Ok…….lots of crap answers here that aren't helping you. Obviously an electric is going to be louder.

1) On the electric, it will be much easier to fret chords. It will require less effort to hold your chords down.

2) The fretboard of the electric will not be as wide; you'll have less room to work with. (everybody I know that goes from acoustic to electric complains about fret-hand cramping, at least initially)

3) You will get WAY more sustain on an electric, even when playing clean…..you'll have to learn to pinch your notes off and mute the strings when you want clean breaks.

4) I'm sure you already know how to hammer-on/pull-off……but on an electric, hammers and pull-offs can genuinely replace picked notes…..not so much on an acoustic. This opens up a completely different style of playing, hell, I'd say more fluid.

5) Yeah…that volume is a huge change. It may make you want to back off a bit…(Django Rheinhardt said it scared him, he hated playing through an amp)…….resist the temptation to play softer, you'll sacrifice your tone.

6) Finger noise! I love finger noise, but if you've never played an electric, you might hate the fact that you can hear yourself switching chords with the volume up. I feel like the electric requires advanced finger-positioning and extremely clean changes if you want to avoid this.

7) When distorted, you will not get clean, full sounding chords on an electric. They'll sound muddy, absolutely nothing you can do to remedy this. That's where the whole two/three note bar-chords come into play. You'll have to learn those, too.

That's a few…….I'm sure I've left some out, but that's a start.

How can I get better at playing Electric guitar?

Besides practicing a lot , like websites, or tutorials!

I disagree with Russel, as any good teacher will tell you, some people learn better "seeing" what they are trying to learn, some, "hearing", . I have some students who learn much quicker when they see it on page and some who need to hear it as they don't easily recognize patterns. So, you should try a few different things to find what works for you. Go to youtube and type in guitar lessons. Then type in the style you want to learn. Do a google search and find tab for the songs you want, try them and see if that works. But, no matter how you go about it, you still have to practice in order to become good.
Good luck to you.

Want to start playing acoustic guitar?

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

I am 19 and am looking to start playing acoustic guitar. When I was younger I played a little electric never took it serious though sadly. But I really want to learn to play acoustic. Just wondering what size guitar I should get to learn on.

Thank you for your time and have a great day.

Ok do to your local music store to try guitars…so you get the perfect fit…if the guitar doesnt fit you, it will be uncomfortable to play ….so even if you dont know any chords or anything, go to the store, sit down on a stole and try different sized guitars.
Hope this helps, Indy

Metal Riff Idea’s: Across the barline - Electric Guitar video lesson [HD]

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

Heres a great excercise that will help you in creating weird sounding note groupings that are placed across the barline which sound awesome too.
All I am doing here is first playing 2 quavers followed by a quaver rest, then repeating, this is a group of three quavers, and so is a 3 over 4 feel. I am just adding one quaver note each time and splitting the notes with just 1 quaver rest.
It is a very important skill to be able to feel the beats going by whilst playing in an odd grouping.
The notation on the video only shows the rhythm of a continuing grouping, and is not directly what i am playing.

How should Iearn how to play electric guitar?

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

I don't have access to guitar lessons. So what would be the best way for me to learn how to play electric guitar?

in simple words,, try doing crazy stuff :]] thats the best, making up your own songs, even if there simple,..

also,

go to ultimate-guitar.com for tabs, that web site has all free tabs and is great

learn simple songs like marry had a little lamb,, (example) and you can build your way up from that..so you can play Metallica stuff

also, on other websites, look up chords, and the notes on the strings,,

yea,, that good advice XDD
