It’s hard to quantify since it depends on how much you practice, how much talent you have, and whether or not you’re taking lessons. But in a real sense you’re asking a question that does not matter. If you enjoy learning to play the guitar and playing the guitar as well as you’re able then you’ve already accomplished a good thing. There will always be people who play better and people who don’t play as well. I urge you to give it a try. Good luck.

I know nothing about playing guitar. Does anyone know what we need to get started and how much we should spend. I don't want to buy more than I need to in case he moves on to something else.
A ten year old should be able to fret a full length neck, but I'd suggest a narrow one–a strat style rather than Les Paul. If his hand is just too small to make the stretches at the bottom, I'd still have him learn with a capo on the third of fifth fret rather than buy him a guitar that he'll outgrow.
If you want to get a good one that's not too expensive, try a Rogue strat style from Musician's Friend, an online music supply house. He'll also need a practice amp–15 watts should be ample with at least an 8" speaker as well as a strap, a chord, and a gig bag. I'd recommend a top brand for the amp–Fender, Marshall, etc. because the amp determines the sound more than the guitar does.
When he's ready to move on to more expensive gear, he can keep these–a "guest" guitar is a great thing to have and the practice amp will be useful for decades.

Well I am real good at Guitar Hero 3 and I can do hard. I am on Lou's Inferno right now. I can't beat Raining Blood, The Number Of The Beast, and One. I know how to do pulls off but I really don't know how to do Hammer on's. Any tips on playing those songs?
Well…when I started playing guitar hero II, I thought for sure that I would never pass Freya on expert. It took me a long time, but I finally did, and beat the game too. The only advice I have for you is don't give up and keep trying. You'll get it. =)
Oh, and a hammer-on is basically the same thing as a pull-off, hammer-ons just go from a lower note to a higher note.
ex. green to red

I'm learning guitar and I only know a couple of chords, but how do I strengthen my fingers, and toughen my fingertips up? Any tips are helpful. I heard from someone (can't remember who) to put rubbing alcohol on my fingertips after playing and it can help a little, but it doesn't seem to help that much. Other than just keep playing (which I'm doing) anything I can do?
None of that helps, I just got done teaching a fifteen year old girl who said the same thing in the beginning. I warned her it was going to take about three months of playing daily to develop the callouses that you need before it stops hurting. You only need to do it for about twenty minutes a day and you'll see in a few months you'll have them, there not too pretty, but playing is more important. She now has them and it makes playing a lot easier. She had a lot of trouble making cords in the beginning also, but now she's jumping from an F cord to a G with ease, it all depends on how bad you want to play and how much time your willing to put into it. Are you starting with cords or are you learning with a teacher, reading music? I always tell people to go to Sam Ash and get a beginners book with a Cd in the back so that you can follow your progress. If your starting on your on with just cords play them about twenty minutes a day and after a bit you'll see it gets easier and easier, you'll be changing cords like a pro, as difficult as it seems in the beginning believe me you'll see the biggest difference in three months of daily playing. I know I see it all the time with my students. Don't give up too soon, you'll get there, and good luck to you !!!!!!

jimi is playing with his teeth at woodstock live.
“Dans le Tenessee, si tu ne sais pas jouer avec les dents, tu es viré. Il y’a beaucoup de types avec des dents cassées dans le milieu de la musique là-bas. Une fois j’ai vu quelqu’un essayait de jouer comme ça et perdre 3 dents! Ils ne connaissent pas le secret de mon succès : une vie saine.” (Jimi Hendrix)
