is playing mandolin and acoustic guitar pretty much the same?

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

what i mean is, if i can play guitar will i be able to play mandolin ( i know it sounds different and stuff…) but like are the chords, strings, notes the same? thanks

You will find it easy to transition from Acoustic guitar to mandolin, but the chords will not be the same.

A mandolin has only 4 strings (in reality 8 strings, but that's because the strings are doubled), whilst an Acoustic guitar has 6.

Also a mandolin is tuned (from lowest to highest) as GDAE (same as violin), whilst the acoustic guitar is tuned EADGBE

So the mandolin is tuned in fifths, whilst the guitar is tuned in fourths. Fifths tuning is a more "logical tuning" and is much easier to play runs of single notes than with fourths. The only drawback is that it doesn't lend itself to six string chords very well. That's why the tuning is ok for mandolin (as it only has 4 strings), but not guitar.

It may take a little time to get used to, but the strumming/picking techniques from Acoustic guitar will be useful in playing mandolin.
